The history of Popular Gold Mart dates back to the year 1935 when it was established by Late Sri Voderbettu Venkatesh Kamath at Car street, Mangalore. Prior to entering the line of the jewellery trade, he was working as a school teacher at Manjeshwar. But as destiny had it, he quit his teaching job and worked in a jewelry shop. After learning the ins and outs of the jewellery business, he set up a venture of his own. Popular Gold Mart was set up with an aim to deliver customized ethnic handcrafted jewellery.

The reigns were passed over to his sons, late Sri Vishwanath Kamath, Surendranath and grandsons.
